A. P. Lyons

Arthur Power Lyons (b. 1879 d. 1965). Arthur Power Lyons was born in Bundaberg in 1879 and studied in Sydney before finding work in the Government Service in Papua in 1906. Lyons worked in the Customs Department, eventually being promoted to Assistant Magistrate in Kokoda, Warden of Gold and Mineral Fields and then Resident Magistrate at Daru in 1912 (Lyons 1925, p 6). Lyons wrote many anthropological reports and government papers during this period, developing his skills as the government anthropologist. Lyons took many photographs all over the Western Region as part of his job, including photographing the Gogodala people and their cultural activities in 1914 (UQ 1980). He developed a friendship with Sir Hubert Murray, who described Lyons as “a hard-working man” (West 1970, p 102). Murray exercised his influence in order to have Lyons’ works and photographs of the Gogodala people published in both MAN in 1922 and The Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute of Great Britain and Ireland in 1926. In 1930 Lyons was appointed Director of Public Works for Papua, also acting as a member of the Building and Petroleum Advisory Boards. Lyons retired in 1943 and passed away in 1965. Lyons’ photograph were donated by Mrs E Lee in 1950 to the Fryer Library before being given to the UQAM (UQ 1980). Today, 96 of Lyons’ photographs are featured in a sub-collection in the online catalogue. A total of 303 items and photographs of Lyons can be found in the online catalogue.
