Description

As reported for 1982 Australian Museum survey: Baton shape. Length 51.5cm. Circumference of handle 10cm. End is squared 4cm x 2cm. Shaft carved in twist design with knot in centre. At base of shaft a plait is carved. There is a plaited knob at top of handle. Wood.

Research notes

Reported by source as having been given to her brother whilst on a trading schooner by an island chief in 1887. The Foundation Donation comprises the items from L. P. Winterbotham's personal collection, which were donated to the University of Queensland in 1948 and form the basis of the Anthropology Museum.
