Description

Parrying shield.
A long shield of dark coloured hard-wood. The entire surface of both the face and the back has been engraved. The face is covered with parallel channels resembling the raised ridges forming “finger-prints”- (see shield #7895). This mainly vertical-orientated pattern extends to the terminal tips where there is a single horizontal line partitioning a small area at both tips, which are sharp like the tip of a triangle. The engraving is superb, expressing a high degree of precision. The surface of the shield appears smooth and glossy. The back of the shield is similarly engraved, with a more intense patterning. A deep long split on one side of the handle travels in both directions away from the handle. There are 22 spots of what appears to be varnish along one margin of the back. They do not appear to be on the surface of the face. The handle area has three precisely placed nail holes at each side margin, one in each corner and one in the middle.
