Painted bark cloth.
Note in Anthropological Society of Queensland Collection Register [Book 118]: These [4114 to 4127] were obtained from Mr Battis who was plantation manager on Kalili Plantation on Lalet Plateau, New Ireland. They were brought to him by the natives 20 years ago [viz. 1929] to sell. They apparently had no idea of where they had come from, but said they 'belonged plenty old time long ago'. He said they had been used in their ceremonies and that the bark on which they are painted belonged to no local tree and the natives could not recognise it nor did they know what the pigments were - it is not wild mulberry bark. The nearest mission was as Pinikudu 30 miles away - Methodist. Mr Battes thinks they were kept in their men's hut. Other painted bark sheets can be found at 4349 and 4350.
