Research notes

Ruth Samuel from Wabag, Enga Province, made this bilum in Mt Hagen. She undertook all stages of manufacture, including 'tanim rop' ('turning the rope', meaning to roll the threads from the balls of wool together - a task which is sometimes taken up by beginners/younger female relatives).

Name/description of design: After first likening this vertical design to a 'pawa pol' ('power pole') Ruth decided upon calling it 'diwai cross (Christian cross) or letter T'. Note that when showing some Lihirians the bilum and telling them this, they giggled and said it was just a design, not representing anything in particular. Wool was sourced from Mt Hagen. [ref Gillespie source file].

Purchased by Dr Gillespie in February 2011 from the market in Londolovit, Lihir Island, New Ireland Province.
