Description

Kebaya. Cream shirt/tunic, long sleeves, no buttons. Muslin/net fabric with hexagon pattern woven in, seams and darts are hand stitched. Cuffs, hem and collar are trimmed with creamy (hand-made) lace. Tag on inside of collar (green embroidered on white) reads "DAMES MODE ATELIER\Toko 'BANJOEMAS'\BUITENZORG".

Research notes

Buitenzorg was the Dutch name for a city in West Java, now known as Bogor. It perhaps indicates the kebaya was made pre-1949 (Indonesian independence).

Items 40354-40356 were donated as antique costume, they have been worn. Southeast Asian valuer Susie Tuckwell noted that they are likely to be vintage rather than antique.
