Description

Research notes

Letter from Winterbotham to McCarthy, Jan 1952: A pestle 6 inches long and 3 inches wide at the base which is rounded and shows no sign of pounding. Around the narrow end is a small groove .... The stone itself has a number of small black shiny particles incorporated in its surface. One of these can be seen near the edge of the base. These [3979 to 3991] were obtained from the Lutheran Mission that was at Finschafen. These were obtained by the Missioner that was there before the First World War and in all probability came from the adjacent Highlands. Exhibited in museum display no 1.
24/07/08: Microscope analysis found coated with sago residue
