Description

Research notes

The annotated ink caption on photograph reads: "Tommy, section Ko-bro of the Dalleburra Tribe. Photographed by Mrs Christian in 1898. His despair is due to the fact that Mrs. Christison had him arrayed in a tumburra, under the impression that it was the universal garb, whereas it was only worn by women" [catalogue card note].

Mounted on board 115 x 165 mm.

Part of a collection of photographs taken by Mrs Christison in the years 1874, 1896 and 1898 while living on Lammermoor station with her husband Robert Christison. Their daughter Mary Montgomery Bennett published some of these photographs in her book 'Christison of Lammermoor' (1927). She donated the photographs along with other documents to the University of Queensland in 1929 where they were held by the Fryer Library until 1980.

Dalleburra was recorded by Christison and Bennett as the name of the Aboriginal people living in the Lammermoor region; Yirandali is recorded by AIATSIS as the preferred name. Locality originally recorded as Lammermoor Tableland.
