Black and white photograph of an old man resting his hand upon the shoulder of a younger man.
"A father greets his son when he returns to the village. When they first meet they embrace with the arms around each others shoulders, and then start telling each other the news. There is usually an exchange of betel nut as a friendly gesture. In some ares on the Sepik it is strange to see a visitor arrive when men are sitting talking beneath the House Tameran. The new arrival will solemnly shake hands with everyone presen, and often there is not a word spoken until each person present has participated in this loose hand shake. When friends pass in canoes they will shoult greetings across the water, and this is often in the form of question and answer. "Where are you going cousin?" "I'm going to get a new log for my house". And the first one will answer: "All right, you can go and get a new log for your house." Thus satisfied they both carry on" [Bartlett 1953].
