Description

Hand drawn and coloured figure on thick brown paper by Gaiarbau. Depicts man with pink, yellow and black decoration on his body and face. Figure appears to be drawn using chalk or pastels.
There is one inscription on the front of the paper in blue ink. It reads “This is the painting on the return journey of the messenger to collect the tribe together for any gathering – initiation or a fight. He reports like this to his chief. He wipes this off for his return.”

Research notes

Drawn by Gaiarbau during his meetings with L.P. Winterbotham, likely between 1950 and 1955.
Item 32497 is an overpainted photograph version of this drawing
