Description

Hand drawn and coloured figure on thick brown paper by Gaiarbau. Depicts man with pink, brown and black decoration on his body and face. Figure appears to be drawn using chalk or pastels.
There is one inscription on the front of the paper in blue ink. It reads “Chief. Painted to welcome visitor or when they come to visit. Possum skin around forehead and neck.” There is some text that has been crossed out that reads “messenger on his outward journey to call the tribe together for a fight with another tribe.”

Research notes

Drawn by Gaiarbau during his meetings with L.P. Winterbotham, likely between 1950 and 1955.
Item 32485 is an overpainted photograph version of this drawing
