Description

Carved wooden mask, painted red with black and gold detail. Mask has two teeth - one painted gold, the other with a pearlescent coating. Mask has holes in the top of the forehead to which the mask’s hair is attached. Hair is constructed of black wool sewn onto a cream coloured piece of cotton material. There is a length of twine at the back, secured to two holes in the sides of the mask. There is a label attached that reads “Malaysia 10”. The back of the mask has been painted pink. Dec 1998, Susan Tuckwell (SE Asian valuer) noted: Wooden painted mask of traditional male character with worried expression, blue and black wool hair.

Research notes

Masks 29471 to 29474 were carved in the state of Kelantan, North east Malaysia. The 'jawless' masks are male (to permit them to speak on stage). The women are supposed to remain silent. The masks were purchased by Major Hill in Kota Bharu, Kelantan, in 1946.
