Description

Research notes

From the UQ Anthropology Museum exhibition 'In the Red; on the vibrancy of things' June 2012 - January 2013.

In the Red exhibition label: Mimi spirit sculpture, c.1978. Kununjku artist Kuningbal (d 1984) was renowned for his static red and white over dotted Mimi sculptures that he created both for sale and for exchange in ceremonies called Mamurrng which celebrate the birth of a male child. Mimi spirits feature elsewhere in rock and bark art of the region as figures of action and animation [Caruana 1993; 38].
