Research notes

October 1996 - Roger Neich, Auckland Museum, identified this headdress as coming from Bouganiville - it is an 'Upi' hat, worn by boys for around a year while they go through the initiation process. Part of Brisbane auctioneer Mr John Samuel Cameron's (died ca 1917) collection which was sold after his widow's death. Bought by Dr Winterbotham and C A Fitzgerald at auction and part of Winterbotham's collection which formed the basis for the Anthropology Museum Collection founded in 1948.
