Description

Paper envelope containing a type of sweet potato.

Research notes

From the UQ Anthropology Museum exhibition 'In the Red; on the vibrancy of things' June 2012 - January 2013.

In the Red exhibition label: Medicinal material, 1937-1953. The plant medicines contained within these envelopes, presumably labelled by Nilles, were used as love charms, to inhibit menstruation and conception and to cause abortion.

This sweet potato was cooked and eaten by men and women. To cause abortion 'it was given to women by an expert together with spells'.
