Research notes

From the UQ Anthropology Museum exhibitions 'Women with Clever Hands past and present' curated by Louise Hamby August 2013. Exhibition label: Production of flat mats like this one were actively encouraged by missions.

Mat label: This beautiful mat was made using the ancient and traditional art of weaving. The fibre used is stripped bark which is chewed, then spun by rubbing with the palm of the hand along the thigh. The lengthy process of preparation and intricate looping, makes this item a work of art.
