Description

Oval coiled fern stem basket with flat base, rigid coiled handle attached on inside of opposite raised sides, plaited edges on body and handle. Registration number 24336 marked with tag.

Research notes

This baby's buka basket was bought on Buka Island by Mrs Zoe Gibson when she lived in Rabaul. It was given to Mrs Tealby, a family member, who later donated it to the Anthropology Museum.

Traditionally buka baskets are woven from fern stems from the genus Lygodium.
