Description

Dec 1998 Susan Tuckwell (SE Asian valuer) identified the place of origin of opium weights 23942 to 23954 as Burma, even though they were collected in Thailand.

Research notes

Transcript from 1979 audiotape by Mrs Martin: 23942 to 23946 and 23947 to 23954 are two sets of opium weights. I think there are 14 in a complete set. Items 23908 to 24133 and 24322 to 24331 were the private collection of Mrs Martin who went to the Province with the American Baptist Mission to set up an international marketing organisation for the tribal arts, mainly textile. Almost all items were exhibited in Museum Display No. 15, 1980. Other Thai Hill tribes items purchased from Mrs Martin can be found at 24425 to 24438.
