Description

A long broad shield of hard-wood. The entire surface of the face of the shield has been painted red with a thick, scaled snake winding along the vertical axis. The head is engraved in great detail, eyes and scales. The body is painted red, white and yellow. The entire surface of the back is painted red. One thumbtack is in the body and there are penciled words – “Mornington Island Used in ceremony”. There is a tack in the handle.

The Foundation Donation comprises the items from L. P. Winterbotham's personal collection, which were donated to the University of Queensland in 1948 and form the basis of the Anthropology Museum.
