Totemic carving: DJANDA (Gould's goanna - Varamus gouldii). Notes by Milingimbi Art & Craft: Hand carved from [one of] several trees found along this coastline: Gulu (Bombax ceiba), Mapandhurr (hibiscus tiliaceus), and Badar or Rangan (Melaleuca cajuputi - the Cajuputi tree) being commonly used. They are then painted with natural ochres in either abstract or realistic designs. Artist: Mondjinju. Part of a series of 28 items (24520 and 24548) related to the DJANKGAWU SISTERS story cycle [detailed at 24534].
